Country farmhouse renovation in Hermidale

This extension transformed a 50 year old home, and the owners’ lifestyle.

What: Renovation

Where: Hermidale, NSW

The project

After some serious deliberation about whether to renovate or knock it over and build from scratch, wheat and cattle farmers Greg and Tania Moody opted to give their 50+ year-old home in western NSW a major facelift.

The couple entertain regularly, often hosting family and friends who visit for a weekend country getaway, so their main concerns related to the lack of outdoor living and bathroom space.

When Tania finally decided on a renovation she had a strong idea of what she wanted. We helped to refine her ideas into a workable plan - balancing the ideal outcome with budget and the practicality of dealing with an older home.

The result

An extension to the southern side of the home afforded them with an incredible 9m x 6m sunroom. It is accessible via bi-fold doors from the lounge room and usable all-year round with gauze and glass windows (to keep out those pesky summer flies).

The 14-seat dining table takes centre-stage while the corner spa, with clear views to the wall-mounted flatscreen TV, invites you to take a load off and relax.

Renovating the main bathroom involved re-fitting the room with floor-to-ceiling tiles and adding a separate shower by utilising space from the adjoining laundry and all PC items were completely upgraded.

The renovation of the ensuite and walk-in-robe - which was formerly a small bedroom-turned under-utilised dressing room - was the most impressive transformation.

A vanity framed by a large mirror greets you as you walk through the open doorway from the master bedroom. To the right side of the vanity is the shower and toilet, which enjoys an abundance of natural light. To the left of the vanity is the walk-in-robe. Tania's clever and well-considered design makes optimal and practical use of the space.

In Tania’s words,

The lifestyle transformation is amazing. Now we can enjoy summer outdoor living without the flies! The way Tim was able to redesign the bedroom, fitting two rooms (ensuite and walk-in-robe) into one without compromising on functionality, style and space... his ideas were just brilliant. He’s transformed a 50-year-old home into a light and airy, modern and functional home for a fraction of the cost of rebuilding. ”
